Just moments ago, Brian Stull of StLBaseballWeekly.com posted Big News. The Cardinals and Jose Martinez have agreed to a two year deal (monies not disclosed) which will carry him through to his first year of arbitration eligibility in 2020.
UPDATE: "Jose Martinez gets 3.25 M, 2 years. Plus incentives" - per Jon Heyman Twitter.
Jose Martinez has been an offensive contributor to the Cardinals, great supporter and motivator for his teammates. Last season, sharing duties at first base and right field, his presence was made known at the plate closing 2018 with a .309/.372/.478/.850 slashline.
Strangely enough, this comes after a statement made to Jenifer Langosch, MLB.com' Cardinals beat writer, by Jose Martinez. Which she shared with Cardinals manager Mike Shildt.
"Shildt was told by MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch that Martinez said "he would rather be here without a job than have been traded this offseason." Shildt was struck by the comment. "That is a huge compliment. A huge compliment," Shildt says. "It speaks well of Jose for being just that considerate of the organization." (KMOX)
Yes, to recognize Jose Martinez, not only on the field with his hard work and dedication, but as the person he is. In my opinion, a great move by our Cardinals organization.
Yes, this takes him up to his first arbitration eligible season, not a free agent until 2023.
Congratulations to Cardinals Jose Martinez.
