The Call from Fall Ball

As the Arizona Fall League draws to a close I wanted to review some past Cardinal Fall League prospects and look ahead to what players may hit the big leagues from this years team. Led by Manager Stubby Clapp the Cardinals were also represented by

Connor Greene RP Memphis

Conner Jones SP Memphis

Evan Kruczynski SP Springfield

Will Latcham RP Springfield

Andy Young 2B Springfield

Tommy Edman 2B/SS Springfield

Lane Thomas OF Memphis

Jeremy Martinez C Memphis

Offensively with 2 games to go Andy Young is leading the Cardinal’s prospects in hitting. Through 18 games Young hit .328/.443/.563 with 3HR and 14 RBI.

Lane Thomas started slow but raised his average .259 by hitting .344/.463/.469 with a HR and 5 RBI over his last 10 games.

Tommy Edman went in reverse of Thomas going into a 3 for 22 slump and is hitting .216 in his 10 games of play.

Jeremy Martinez started 10 games behind the plate and went 8 for 35 with 2 RBI hitting .228.

P Evan Kuczynski had the second best ERA in the league at 1.37. Errors hurt him in is 1st start as he gave up 5 unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He also gave up 6 runs in his 3rd start, but finished well in his last 2 starts throwing 9 scoreless innings giving up 4 hits with 4 walks and 8 KOs.

Conner Jones had 1 bad outing in 8 games of relief. In that appearance he gave up 6 hits and 4 runs in 1 1/3 innings, he went 12 innings with 9 hits and 3 ER in his other 7 games.

Conner Greene walked 15 in 7.2 innings allowing 13 hits leading to a 14.09 ERA.

Will Latcham faired only slightly better than Greene throwing in 9 games going 10.1 innings with 12 hits, and 8 walks and a 10.45 ERA.

Recent Cardinal history proves that some our Fall League players will hit the majors in 2 years or less.

2017: Jordan Hicks, Edmundo Sosa with a late call up, and Sandy Alcantara that we gave up for Ozuna made 6 starts for the Marlins in 2018.

2016: Paul Dejong, Harrison Bader, Tyler O,Neill (still in Mariners organization at the time), Austin Gomber all had significant MLB time, along with Carson Kelly and Ryan Sherriff.

2015: Saw Luke Weaver, Aledmys Diaz, Alex Reyes, Patrick Wisdom, along with Tyler Webb and Yairo Munoz see major league action in 2018.

The Cardinal’s should obviously be looking for outside help this winter to increase our 2019 playoff chances. But by 2020 I do believe Andy Young has Kolten Wong looking over his shoulder at 2nd base. Tommy Edman is Greg Garcia reincarnated, and Evan Kruczynski may be the lefty that we have been paying millions for with little to show for it.

And now I turn this article back over to the 2018 winter FA signing frenzy.

Thanks for reading and I also update our minor league players progress in the Fall and Winter leagues at St. Louis Cardinal Minor League Spotlight on Facebook and share on the Cardinal Nation 24/7 page and Cardinals Nation group as well.
