Did Ortiz beat us in 2013 or just have a good series?

I thought I would take a break from regular Cardinal posts to address some thing that come up about once a month (or so it seems). The idea that it was us pitching to Davis Ortiz that cost us the 2013 World Series. Yes he was the MVP. Yes he had a great series. Did HE REALLY beat us? I don't think so. Yes he went 11 for 16 with 8BB, 2Doubles, 2 HRs and 6 RBIs translating to a .688/.760/.1188.

People claimed we didn't walk him enough. we walked him 8 TIMES! The claim that he beat us just does not add up to the game logs.

GAME 1 Boston - 8 St. Louis 1

Bottom of the first inning David Ortiz reaches Fielder's choice E6. Bases loaded 1out, Mike Napoli doubled clearing the bases, 3-0 Boston.

In the bottom of the 2nd Ortiz hit a Sac fly to drive in a run 5 - 0

in the bottom of the 7th after 2 outs Pedroia reaches on an error and Ortiz hits a 2 run Home Run making it 7-0

The Cardinals got their only run on a solo Home Run in the Top of the 9th 8-1.

So while Ortiz scored the THIRD run of the game and drove in 3 more they were all inconsequential as the Cardinals only scored 1 run

GAME 2 St. Louis 4 - Boston 2

Hard to see how Ortiz beat us in this game, but he did account for the 2 runs the Red Sox scored in the bottom of the 6th with a two run HR.

So quick recap here 5 of Ortiz's 6 RBIs were in the 1st TWO games, ONE of which St. Louis won.

GAME 3 St. Louis 5 - Boston 4

Again a Cardinal win is hard to see how Ortiz hurt the Cardinals As for Ortiz he grounded out walked twice, singled once and never made it past 2nd base.

GAME 4 Boston 4 - St. Louis 2

in the top of the second Ortiz singled and was erased in a double play

In the top of the 5th Ortiz doubled and scored the tying run on a sac fly from Stephen Drew 1- 1.

In the top of the 6th Ortiz walked and scored on a Home Run by Jonny Gomes 4 - 1

In the top of the 8th Ortiz singled and was substituted with a pinch runner who did not score 4 - 2

This game his double put him in a position to score the tying run. WE put him on in the 6th so yes you can say he did "hurt" us in this game.

GAME 5 Boston 3 - St. Louis 1

In the top of the 1st Ortiz doubled Pedroia home 1 - 0

In the top of the 4th Ortiz singled but was erased in a double play. St. Louis tied the game bottom of the 4th 1 - 1

In the top of the 6th Ortiz flied out to CF.

In the top of the 7th David Ross drove in the go ahead/winning run with a double scoring Xander Bogaerts 2 - 1 then Jacoby Ellsbury singled home Stephen Drew 3 - 1

In the top of the 8th Ortiz singled and was left on base.

Did Ortiz hurt us this game? That is debatable when you only score one run.

GAME 6 Boston St. Louis 1

In the bottom of the 1st Ortiz walked left on base

In the bottom of the 3rd Ortiz walked and was drove in by a Shane Victorino double 3 - 0

In the bottom of the 4th Ortiz walked and was driven in by a Shane Victorino single 5 - 0

In the bottom of the 6th Ortiz strikes out 6 - 0

In the bottom of the 8th Ortiz walked left on base

Here again Ortiz scored 2 runs but hard to say HE is the one that beat the Cardinals when They put him on base and again when you only score one run. You get what you pay for.

So let's review

Game 1 - Ortiz scored a run AFTER reaching base on an error he drives in 3 runs. However it was Victorino who drove in the 1st 5 runs. In addition the Cardinals did not score the 9th inning.

Game 2 Cardinal win

Game 3 Cardinal win

Game 4 Ortiz on base 4 times scored once.

Game 5 Ortiz did drive in the 1st run of the game but the go ahead and ultimately winning run was driven in by David Ross.

Game 6 Ortiz was walked 4 times and was driven in Shane Victorino twice who drove in 5RBIs.

Yes Ortiz had a good series but 5 of his RBIs and both of his HRs came in the 1st two games. In 3 games the cardinals scored only 1 run. That just doesn't seem to me that David Ortiz was the reason we lost the 2013 World Series.
