Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina reigns again in the National League. The 36 year old has made his own history in his position as backstop.
Molina is a nine time All Star, five time MVP contender and has won one NL Silver Slugger Award winner in his career. He was award the Rawlings 2018 Golden Glove Award for his career ninth. He inches closer to "Pudge" Rodriguez who holds 13 as a catcher.
He has two years left on his contract. And, as Cardinals fans know their beloved catcher, he will be just as strong behind the plate to the end of 2020.
Another Cardinals, Kolten Wong, remains in the top three NL finalist list as second baseman for this past season. A much deserved recognition; but, he lost out to Colorado Rockies 2B D.J. LeMahieu as trophy recipient.
"The advanced metrics loved Wong's defense this season, as he edged LeMahieu at second in Defensive Runs Saved (19 to 18) and Ultimate Zone Rating (13.4 to 11.0), among many other defensive statistical categories." (Brenden Schaeffer, KMOV News)
However, the bottomline voting by MLB managers and coaches contradicted the stats and held with LeMahieu.
Cardinals fans have every right to be very disappointed with their decision. Not only Cardinals fans, but Cubs fans, too. Their 2B Javier Baez, another extremely good second baseman, lost out in the voting.
Probably the only time in MLB NL history these two fan bases agree - the winner should not have been D.J. LeMahieu.
Even though, I extend my congratulations to Wong for his much deserved recognition in the National League. I certainly foresee the hardware going home with him in his future.
Congratulations to Yadier Molina ~ Mentor, Field General with an Eagle Eye ~ The honor to see him receive his ninth Golden Glove Award as Cardinals catcher extraordinaire.
