St. Louis Cardinals prospect Alex Reyes, returning after two full seasons removed due to surgeries, has pitched a total of three innings during this Spring's exhibition games. With his much anticipated return this season, the lingering questions were would he be ready for the Opening Day roster and in what capacity. In the Cardinals bullpen; or, possibly in the rotation.
With being monitored, observed and evaluated throughout Spring camp, A Reyes is on track to make the Opening Day roster part of the bullpen at this juncture. As time is drawing short, only fifteen days away from the MLB season to begin, not enough for the young arm to be rotation ready.
In Tuesday's match-up against the Atlanta Braves in the seventh, he was lights out and back in control with command. Sailing through his one inning, no walks issued to add to the four he had previously. A Reyes closed his inning, pitching around one error having to face his fourth batter, with 14 PC and 11 strikes thrown. His two strikeouts were on strike-3 curve balls.
Per Alex Reyes: "I feel like my stuff will play out of the bullpen or as a starter," Reyes said after the scoreless inning. "Whatever the organization feels is right I’m down for it. And if that’s in the bullpen or as a starter, I’m open to whatever. I’m excited to be a part of the team, whichever role." (Derrick Goold, St. Louis Post-Dispatch).
Now, manager Mike Schildt wants to bump his workload up to see back-to-back innings thrown. Should, more than likely, A Reyes stays on course he will earn his spot in the bullpen to begin the 2019 season. There is just not enough time left before the regular season begins to be rotation ready. However, that is a goal further into the season. But, Shildt wants to be reassured with confidence that A Reyes is ready without any limitations going into the season.
CARLOS MARTINEZ RE-EVALUATION
Cardinals will meet with pitcher Carlos Martinez (shoulder/PRP injection, Feb 26) today to find out what his near future holds. Also, the conversation will hold bullpen possible - or how close to rotation ready will he be time-frames.
Being part of the Opening Day roster is improbable for either consideration. Look for C Martinez to begin the 2019 season on the "IL". For the rotation, more than likely a month or more (May or June) before his return. As a reliever, expectations could be as soon as April.
More information regarding their meeting will be available later today.
SIX MORE PLAYERS REMOVED FROM SPRING ROSTER
Monday, March 11, the Cardinals announced that IF Ramon Urias and OF Lane Thomas were optioned to Memphis Triple-A. Pitchers Connor Jones and Jake Woodford, along with catchers Jose Godoy and Brian O'Keefe, were re-assigned to minor league camp.
With the move of ten previous players last Saturday, Monday's moves now puts the Cardinals Spring roster at 49 players, 33 roster players.
